Sony Music Entertainment has revealed taking down over 75,000 AI-generated deepfake tracks as they formally oppose the UK's proposed AI regulations.

The company disclosed this information during a consultation on AI copyright regulations, specifically addressing the UK government's proposal for an AI-training "opt-out" system. This system would allow AI companies to train models on copyrighted materials without prior authorization unless rightsholders explicitly opt out.

The scale of the problem is significant - Sony Music reported approximately 10,000 takedowns as of November 2023, indicating an average of 144 flagged works per day since then. Despite robust flagging procedures, some unauthorized AI-generated content likely remains undetected.

Sony Music strongly opposes the opt-out proposal, arguing it would:

  • Harm artists
  • Disrupt ongoing training-license negotiations
  • Negatively impact intellectual property rights
  • Cause economic damage

The UK government has delayed the AI Bill's publication until at least summer while reviewing consultation responses. The consultation, which ended February 25th, attracted responses from major labels, Merlin, AIM, and various non-music organizations, all expressing concerns about the proposed regulations.

The government maintains its dual objectives of "turbocharging AI" while promoting economic growth, stating they're reviewing consultation feedback to develop optimal policy solutions.
