The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has identified potential consumer protection law breaches by Ticketmaster during the recent Oasis ticket sales.

Key Findings:

  1. Platinum Ticket Misrepresentation
  • Ticketmaster allegedly increased prices without properly explaining that "platinum" tickets offered no additional benefits
  • These tickets were often in the same areas as standard tickets, potentially misleading consumers about their value
  1. Standing Ticket Price Issues
  • The platform failed to inform customers about two different standing ticket price categories
  • Lower-priced standing tickets were sold first, followed by more expensive ones
  • Customers waited in long queues without knowing the final price they would pay

Current Status:

  • Ticketmaster has implemented some changes to their ticket sales process
  • The CMA deems these changes insufficient
  • Ongoing discussions between CMA and Ticketmaster focus on:
    • Improved ticket labeling
    • Enhanced consumer information
    • Additional operational adjustments

Ticketmaster's Response: "At Ticketmaster, we strive to provide the best ticketing platform through a simple, transparent and consumer-friendly experience. We welcome the CMA's input in helping make the industry even better for fans."

Notably, the investigation found no evidence of Dynamic Pricing implementation in this case, despite initial concerns. The probe continues as the CMA seeks further improvements to Ticketmaster's sales practices.
