The Notorious B.I.G., also known as Biggie Smalls, was primarily signed to Bad Boy Records, founded by Sean "Puffy" Combs (now known as Diddy). Biggie signed with Bad Boy Records in 1993, marking the beginning of a partnership that would help define hip-hop in the 1990s.

Before signing to Bad Boy, Biggie was featured on the remix of Mary J. Blige's "Real Love" in 1992, which caught the attention of Combs, who was working as an A&R executive at Uptown Records at the time.
