Louisiana legislators have penned an open letter criticizing past Super Bowl halftime shows as 'lewd' and 'offensive,' demanding more family-friendly performances for Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.

A group of 17 Republican legislators addressed their concerns to the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation and the Louisiana Stadium and Expo District, citing their rights as representatives of taxpayers who help fund Super Bowl events in the state.

The letter specifically criticizes several past performances:

  • Rihanna's 2023 performance for offensive lyrics
  • Jennifer Lopez's 2020 show
  • The 2004 Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake performance with its "wardrobe malfunction"

The legislators argue that while such performances might be acceptable in other states, they don't align with Louisiana's community standards. They're requesting that future contracts for state-funded facilities include written provisions ensuring performers adhere to local decency standards.

While the letter cannot affect existing contracts for the upcoming Super Bowl LIX, it represents an attempt to influence future halftime show content. Critics note the irony of these complaints given New Orleans' famous Bourbon Street entertainment district.
