Microsoft Returns as Potential TikTok Buyer, Trump Confirms Acquisition Talks
Microsoft is reportedly in talks to acquire TikTok, according to recent statements from President Trump who has expressed interest in seeing a bidding war for the social media platform. This marks Microsoft's second potential attempt at acquiring TikTok, following an unsuccessful bid in 2020.

Key developments in the potential TikTok acquisition:
- TikTok has been removed from Apple and Google app stores following a 75-day ban
- ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, needs Chinese government approval for any sale
- Multiple parties have expressed interest in purchasing TikTok, including YouTube creator MrBeast
- Discussions can now proceed following Scott Bessent's confirmation as Treasury Secretary
ByteDance currently generates only 6-10% of its revenue from TikTok operations. Trump emphasized that any deal must exclude Chinese involvement, stating, "We'll see what happens. We're going to have a lot of people bidding on it. If we can save all that voice and all the jobs, and China won't be involved, we don't want China involved, but we'll see what happens."
The potential acquisition remains in early stages, with Microsoft representatives declining to comment on the matter. Any successful deal would require approval from both U.S. and Chinese authorities, similar to the requirements that prevented the 2020 acquisition attempts by Microsoft and Oracle.
